The Back Story.... aka "How We Got Here"
Expansion grew out of a need for people who found gaining and encouraging interesting.
BWA:
It started with Belly Weekend Atlanta which was born out of
chatter on a gainer/encourager website. It seemed that people wanted an event
but no one knew what steps to get it going or where to have it. I had time
on my hands at the time and spoke up.
It was called Belly Weekend Atlanta (BWA) because that was exactly what it was.
I didn't think far enough ahead to see that it would become an annual
event. It did, and the three BWA’s that we had were terrific.
The first year there may have been about 15 guys show up,
almost all were gainer / encourager types. The weekend was not planned out (at
all) and we picked up 4-5 other guys throughout the weekend.
During the second year and third year there was a registration process, structure and we partnered with the Southern Bears for their event called "Bear All". Our participant level rose to about 45 and 55 respectively.
EXP:
Entering 2007 we faced these challenges. First we had been having the event across Independence Day Weekend and in 2007 the 4th falls on a Wednesday. We had partnered with Bear All for the last two years and we weren't sure that was going to be possible again. And finally, the event, though attended by an incredible group of personable and hot men, was losing its distinction as a gainer and encourager event.
It was turning more into a Bear / Convergence type of event. Since there are options for those that enjoy attending great events such as Convergence or any number of great Bear events – It was time to make BWA what it had been intended for in the beginning - an event for Gainers and Encouragers.
With that said, Belly Weekend Atlanta became "EXPANSION". We decided to no longer partner with the now defunct “Bear-All” in Atlanta but instead, have our own self-contained event.
EXPANSION was to be based in Atlanta but without a city in the name of the event, we would be able to move it to different cities or places each year. The goal of the event is to bring the male gay and bi gainer / encourager / bloater community together to meet new friends and have a weekend of fun.
Since introducing Expansion, we have held the event in Atlanta,
Orlando and New
Orleans. Talk
of a cruise is at hand and we are looking forward to exploring new cities at
each event. Attendance at each of the
Expansion’s has grown greatly and are looking forward to meeting new friends
and “gaining community brothers” at our next event.
